#          Name                                                  Age      Registration District   Vol.     Page

1. Bridget Eustace,                             2Q       43        Naas                            2          713

Bridget Eustace (formerly Bealin), married, about 43 years old, wife of a farmer, Ballyfolan, Blessington District, County Wicklow died 29 March 1887 from puerperal fever, (thirteen days), certified (13/3/87). Her husband John (his X mark) Eustace was present at the death which occurred at Ballyfolan, Manor Kilbride. The death was recorded 13 April, 1887, K. Reilly, Registrar. Bridget Eustace formerly Bealin was born about 1844.

Note: Bridget Bealin, age 21, daughter of Peter Bealin, farmer of Kilbride, County Wicklow married John Eustace, age 21, son of James Eustace, farmer of Ballyfolan, County Wicklow on November 13, 1877 at Manor Kilbride Chapel. There is a discrepancy in the records regarding Bridget’s age. The marriage record of 1877 indicates she was 21 years old which would make her born about 1856 while the death record in 1887 gives her age as 43 which would make her born in 1844.

Notes from Sean Eustace: John Eustace was Sean Eustace's grandfather. From his marriage to Bridget Bealin they had two children; Michael and Mary. Mary Eustace, daughter of John Eustace and Bridget Bealin was born 10 December 1878 and baptized 11 December at Blessington. Michael Eustace, son of John Eustace of Ballyfolan and Bridget Eustace (Bealin) was born 17 December 1883 at Kilbride and baptized the same day. The baptism is recorded at Blessington. Neither of Mary or Michael married. Michael died during the big snow storm of February 14, 1947 and is buried in Manor Kilbride. His stepmother Ellen my grandmother died at the same time. One of the deaths was on 14 February 1947. His sister Mary lived into her 90's and as far as I recall she died in the 1960's -  I remember her well, most days coming from national school I dropped in and was treated royally.

John, Sean's grandfather re-married this time to Ellen Walsh of Scurloxleap, Manor Kilbride. John's sister married Ellen's brother so the offspring were double first cousins to Sean's father's family.

Puerperal fever was a devastating disease. It affected women within the first three days after childbirth and progressed rapidly, causing acute symptoms of severe abdominal pain, fever and debility. Although it had been recognized from as early as the time of the Hippocratic corpus that women in childbed were prone to fevers, the distinct name, “puerperal fever” appears in the historical record only in the early eighteenth century.
