Eustace Families Association

Our Eustice family comes from Ireland. We do not know which city they emigrated from or when. But our guess is around 1840`s and the city of Dublin.

Eustace Families in County Wicklow

By: Ronald F. Eustice

Early Wicklow Eustace Origins:

The Eustace family has been present in County Wicklow at least as early as the 1650's when the Act of Resettlement and Distribution forced Irish Catholics to leave their homes and farms. It is likely that most or perhaps all Eustaces of Wicklow trace back to various branches of the once powerful Eustace families of Counties Dublin and Kildare. The earliest records of Eustace family members are found on headstones in the Manor Kilbride cemetery. At Manor Kilbride we find the following early burials;

·         Alexander Ushtis (Eustace); died 1717; aged 62 years, (born about 1645);

·         Oliver Eustace; died December 18, 1775; age 76 years, (born about 1699); also his wife Bridget Eustace; died Feb. 14, 1778; age 63 years, (born about 1715);

·         James Eustace; died January 5, 1810; about 66 years of age, (born about 1744); erected by his wife Catherine; also James Eustace, died March 17, 1894; aged 84 years;

·         Oliver Eustace; died 7 February 1901; age 86 years, (born about 1815); also Oner (Conlon) his wife; died August 19, 1873; age 46 years (born about 1827);

·         Anne Eustace wife of Lawrence Walsh; Anne died 15 January 1947; aged 84 years, (born 1863);  Lawrence Walsh died 14 April 1927;

Oliver (son of Christopher) and Oner (Condon) Eustace lived at Knockbawn in the parish of Kilbride, County Wicklow. They were the parents of at least twelve children. Children born to Oliver and Oner Eustace included John, Daniel, Hugh, James, Christopher, Patrick, Matthew, Peter, Esther and three or four daughters. (James was born on 29 Feb 1864). Family tradition holds that Hugh, Mathew, Pat, Christy, Dan and John Eustace left for America around turn of the last century or earlier. Several were believed to have settled in Chicago, but contact was lost.

John C. Eustace was born about 1862 in Ireland, immigrated to the US in 1878 and was naturalized in 1883. He married Mary Ann Donahue (Ryan) and in several censuses the family lived on Flamingo Street in Chicago, IL. John C. Eustace age 69 is widowed by 1930 and according the 1930 Federal census he is living with his daughter, Ruth and son-in-law, George Novak and their two children, George age 4 1/2 and John age 3.  They lived on Scoville Avenue in Oak Park, Illinois.  John C. Eustace died in 1935 and had three children: Ruth M; 1890-1940; married George Novak in 1925, Honor, born in 1891, died young, and Oliver J. born February 13, 1896.

Oliver J. Eustace, son of John C. Eustace (above) , was a proof reader at the Reuben C. Donnelly Company in Chicago. He died in Oak Park, Illinois in December of 1983.  Oliver married Mary Ryan and they had no children.  Oliver was a World War I veteran and served in the US Army Balloon Corps. There is some evidence, they adopted a cousin whose name was Edmund Cullen.

Daniel F. Eustace was born 5 September 1864 at Knockbawn townland, Blessington District in County Wicklow, Ireland.  The 1910 US Federal Census states that Daniel F. Eustace immigrated to the US in 1887.  However the 1900 Federal Census states he immigrated in 1899.  This date is likely when he was naturalized.  He married Margaret Rafferty in Chicago, IL on May 18, 1892 and they had four children:  Honor L.  born 1893, Margaret born 1896, Harry born June 25, 1898 and Rose M. born 1903.  World War I draft registration records show that Harry Joseph Eustace born in 1898, was a student at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland.    At this time, his family lived at 5445 Drezel Ave. in Chicago.  Harry died in Chicago in August of 1968.

Of the daughters of Oliver and Oner Eustace oral tradition says that a daughter Esther lived at Knock Bawn and that of the three remaining daughters, one married a Farrily (Farley), another married John Walsh and the third married Jim Kelly of Carrigngabhar.

Peter Eustace, brother to John and Oliver mentioned previously, remained in Ireland and lived in Co. Wicklow his entire life. Peter was a farmer and lived at Tinode, Manor Kilbride in Wicklow. On 10 February 1912, he married Margaret Purcell, daughter of Michael Purcell also of Tinode, Kilbride, and they had ten children (eight reaching adulthood).
