Remillard Family

of  Napierville, Quebec &  Staples, Minnesota

Alexandre Rémillard son of Louis-Marie Rémillard and Marie-Louise Trottier was baptized 31 August 1823 at Naperville, Quebec;  Alexandre Rémillard learned the milling trade at an early age in the Parish of St. Cyprien at Napierville. He married Josephte Goyette (Jacques and Catherine Brossard) on 9 January 1844 at Napierville. About 1868, the Alexandre Remillard family came to the United States and settled at Norton Mills, Vermont. About a year later the  family came west to Minnesota and first settled during 1869 in Wells Township, Rice County (1870 US Census). Later they went to Wheatland, Rice County, Minnesota before moving together with other French Canadian families to Long Prairie, Minnesota in 1887. Eventually they settled in about 1890 at Staples, Todd County. Alexandre died on 20 March, 1903 at Staples. Josephte Goyette Remillard was born at Napierville, Quebec on 24 December 1817 and died at Staples 13 March 1916 and is also buried at Evergreen Cemetery at Staples, Minnesota.

Family of Alexandre Remillard & Josette Goyette:

1.      Marie-Phebe (Phoebe); baptized 13 November 1844 at Napierville; died 1 November 1934 at Minneapolis, Minnesota. She married Prudent St. Amant on 12 June 1866 at Farnham, Quebec.

2.      Cyprien-Alexandre; born 21 March 1847 at Napierville; died 16 May 1927 at Staples, Minnesota. He married (1) Margaret Berry (Baril) on 1 January 1875 at Wheatland Township, Minnesota; married (2) Antoinette Plaisance (Thomas and Elmire Goudreau of St. Jean Deschaillons, Quebec) on 18 May 1885 at Shieldsville, Rice County, Minnesota.

3.      Jules Remillard; born 25 March 1849 at Napierville; died 5 June 1910 at Wheatland Township, Rice County, Minnesota. He married Elmire Richer also Richie (Narcisse and Marguerite Barabe) on 5 June 1877 at Wheatland.

4.      Marie-Louise; baptized 14 September 1851 and buried 23 January 1853 at Napierville;

5.      Marie-Louise; baptized 31 July 1853 at Napierville; died in Hennepin County, Minnesota; married 3 April 1883 at Shieldsville, Minnesota to Benjamin Berry; alive in 1903 per Alexandre’s obituary.

6.      Joseph; baptized 27 August 1855 at Napierville; died 3 December 1874 aged 19 years and 4 months at Wheatland; buried St. Louis Catholic Cemetery, Wheatland; unmarried;

7.      Edward; baptized 7 June 1857 at Napierville, died in Lincoln County, Minnesota. He married Asylda Benjamin on 28 June 1883 in Rice County, Minnesota.

8.      Marie-Catherine-Hermenegilde; baptized 27 April, 1859 at Napierville; married John Felix on 8 January 1882 at Shieldsville, Minnesota.

9.      Amelia; born 1861;

10.  Louis-Napoleon; born c1863; living at Slocan City, British Columbia in 1903; died 4 Apr 1939 and buried in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The townsite of Slocan City was staked at the lower end of Slocan Lake in 1892 following massive silver strikes nearby. The site was conveniently close to three principal ore producing areas. By 1900, there were 12 hotels in Slocan; by 1920 there were only three. Slocan became a city in June 1901 and reverted to village status in June 1958. During the 1890s, Slocan City was a bustling, boisterous, boomtown filled with hotels, saloons, pack teams, rail cars filled with ore, and miners in pursuit of the ever elusive "mother-lode".
