Andrew Hogan, son of Jeremiah Hogan and Mary Ryan was born in County Limerick about 1832. Andrew came to the US about 1856 at the age of nineteen. He first settled in Covington, Kentucky where he met and married Mary Handerhan, a native of County Kerry whom he married about 1860. In Covington, Andrew Hogan earned his living as best he could. His occupation is listed as “huckster” on the 1870 Covington census. The following children were born to Andrew and Mary Hogan in Covington, Kentucky:

• Mary Hogan, b. 1862 in Covington, Kentucky

• James Hogan, b. 1864 in Covington, Kentucky

• John Hogan, b. 1866 in Covington, Kentucky

• Cathrine Hogan, b. 1867, in Covington, Kentucky; she married James Eustice

• Thomas Hogan, b. 1868 in Covington, Kentucky
• Margaret Hogan, b. 1875 at Janesville, Minnesota.

 

Andrew and Mary (Hanrahan) Hogan family came to Alton Township, Waseca County, Minnesota in 1874 and purchased a farm one mile east of Janesville. Andrew Hogan was a farmer throughout his lifetime.

1855

Several members of the Hogan family came to Waseca County as early as the 1855. These included James, John, Patrick, Jeremiah, Thomas and Margaret. James, Thomas, John and Jerry Hogan, four brothers, came from the state of Kentucky in 1855, and settled in the timber on the west side of Lake Elysian in Janesville township. These were among the hardy pioneers that came here to make homes for themselves and their children, and they became permanent settlers.

The First Waseca County Election (1855):

The general election was held the second Tuesday in October. There were two voting precincts. The northern half of the county was called “Swavesey” and the southern half “LeSueur River”. The names of those who resided in the “Swavesey” precinct were as follows: A.C. Smith, L.B. Osgood, Daniel McDaniels, John H. Wheeler, David Wood, Aaron Hanes, J.W. Hosmer, Michael Johnson, Jonathan Howell, A.J. Bell, S.F. Wyman, Chris Remund, W.M. Gray, J.M. Bliven, Ole Knutson, Curtis Hatch, M.P. Ide, Simeon Smith, James, John, Thomas and Jerry Hogan, Patrick McCue, Patrick Moonan, George Morrill, John Cunningham and John Rowley.

Jeremiah Hogan, a native of Cappamore, County Limerick married Mary Ryan in Ireland before 18xx.

Jerry (Jeremiah) Hogan, a single man, living alone, one of the early settlers of Waseca County, was found dead in his cabin March 11, 1874. Those who found him judged he had been dead several days when the body was found, and that he died of disease. For some time prior to his death he had been considered partially insane. His team was found in the stable nearly starved.

James Hogan was born in County Limerick in May 1822 and did not marry. The 1880 US Census shows James Hogan living with his sister Margaret Cahill and Margaret's son Michael Cahill. He died at Janesville 7 July 1903. Thomas Hogan Margaret Hogan was born about 1837 in County Limerick and died 2 June 1923 at Janesville. She married Patrick Cahill on December 22, 1867 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, rural Waseca County.

 

John Hogan was born in County Limerick about 1825 and died June 16, 1898 at age 73. He married Ann Manning about 1860. They had at least three children; Margaret, Jeremiah and John.

 

Andrew Hogan died May 20, 1922 at Janesville, Minnesota. Mary Hanrahan Hogan died at Janesville on June 4, 1921. The cause of death for Andrew is listed as ---- and ---for Mary. Andrew Hogan was survived by five children; John of St. Paul, Thomas of Minneapolis, Mary (Mrs. Patrick) Mulcahy of Waterville, Mrs. T.J. Sullivan of Faribault and Cathrine (Mrs. James) Eustice of rural Waseca. One son, James Hogan died in 1918 and another child died in infancy.
